Getting into the content creator game can feel a little overwhelming when you're just getting your feet wet—especially when it comes to choosing an action camera. I like things simple, easy, and rugged, and the DJI Osmo Action 5 Pro Adventure Combo turned out to be just what the doctor ordered.

This compact action camera is a little smaller than a bar of soap and impressively tough. Right out of the box, the first thing you notice is its straightforward, minimalist design. It has just two physical buttons—one for power and switching modes, and one for recording. That’s it. There’s nothing flashy about the design, but everything feels purposeful.

One feature I really appreciate in the field is the dual touchscreens. The rear screen is large and bright, while the front screen is perfect for checking framing when filming yourself. Both are OLED displays, which means they’re sharp, colorful, and easy to see outdoors.

When you’re standing on a windy overlook or balancing on rocks near a stream, the last thing you want is complicated menus. Thankfully, the menu system is very simple. Swipe, tap, adjust what you need, and you’re back to shooting in seconds. The learning curve is small, and after a few days of use it becomes second nature.

Out in the field, gear gets knocked around. It gets wet, it gets cold, and sometimes it takes a few bumps along the trail. This little camera handles that kind of real-world outdoor use without much fuss. It’s even waterproof to about 65 feet, so if it takes a quick dip in a stream, you can just wipe it off and keep filming.

In short, it feels like a camera that was made for a backpack, not a shelf.

One small quirk I’ve noticed is the power button also cycles through shooting modes. Press and hold turns the camera on or off, while a quick press switches modes. The hold time feels a little longer than other gadgets I’ve used, so occasionally I don’t hold it quite long enough and it changes modes without me realizing it.

The Adventure Combo is a great choice for outdoor folks because it includes extra batteries and a 1.5-meter extension rod. If you’re hiking, kayaking, trail riding, or just spending a long day outside shooting, those extras come in handy.

Accessories I Use

A few accessories make the camera even more useful in the field:

  • Screen protectors (front and back)

  • Telesin Neck Mount SE 2.0 with air cushion

  • K&F Concept magnetic quick-release adapters

  • Pgytech camera cage

These simple additions help protect the camera and make it easier to mount, carry, and use it out on the trail.

I only recommend equipment that’s proven itself through early mornings, challenging weather, and my tendency to wander off trail for “just one more shot.”

Thanks for helping support what I do.
