L Brackets for Landscape Photography

A Vital Accessory

When you get serious about landscape photography, you need an L bracket—no ifs, ands, or buts about it. L brackets are rarely discussed, typically overlooked, and highly underrated.

L brackets are metal plates that attach to your camera via the tripod socket at the bottom of your camera. They are typically Arca-Swiss compatible, with dovetails on both planes that allow for fast, efficient mounting on an Arca-Swiss clamp.

Why L Brackets Matter

L brackets let you quickly transition from landscape to portrait orientation while keeping the center of gravity directly over the column of your tripod. This improves balance, stability, and overall image sharpness—especially when shooting in challenging conditions.

The quick-release plates that are included with tripods are notoriously too small and always loosen, especially when tilting a ball head for portrait-oriented shots. An L bracket completely solves this problem.

Brand-Specific vs. Universal L Brackets

While more expensive, you definitely want to get a brand-specific L bracket for your camera rather than a universal fit. L brackets made specifically for your camera will still allow full access to the battery door and access ports.

L Brackets I Use

I use the Kirk L-bracket for my Nikon Z8 and Z7ii, and the 3 Legged Thing Zelda L-bracket for my Nikon Z6ii. I purchased the copper (orange) color for the 3 Legged Thing Zelda to help differentiate this camera from the Nikon Z7ii, since they use the same body size.

This accessory is vital to taking your landscape photography to the next level.

I only recommend equipment that’s proven itself through early mornings, challenging weather, and my tendency to wander off trail for “just one more shot.”

Thanks for helping support what I do.
