As a photographer who transitioned into video, I ran into one major point of confusion when shopping for my first fluid tripod head. I’ll keep this simple—focusing on generalizations and steering clear of technical details.

Arca-Swiss vs. Manfrotto: The Quick-Release Confusion

When attaching cameras to tripods, there are two primary quick-release systems:

Arca-Swiss

Manfrotto

These systems are used across:

• Tripods and tripod heads

• Quick-release plates

• L-brackets

• Lens feet

In general:

Still photography = Arca-Swiss

Videography = Manfrotto

This applies about 98% of the time.

To use Arca-Swiss and Manfrotto together, you need an adapter.

I hate adapters.

Why I Chose the Leofoto BV-20K

All of my camera gear uses Arca-Swiss, yet most fluid video tripod heads are built around Manfrotto. That’s where the Leofoto BV-20K fluid tripod head stands out.

• Native Arca-Swiss mounting system

• No adapters required

• All of my lens feet attach directly.

Hello, Leofoto BV-20K.

From Still Photography to Video

When I approach a scene as a landscape photographer, my goal is simple:

Keep the camera completely still.

When shooting landscape or wildlife video, the goal changes:

• Keep the camera stable and track subjects smoothly through the scene.

Enter the Leofoto BV-20K fluid head.

Controls and Adjustability

This fluid head introduced several new controls for me. Pan (left-right), tilt (up-down), lockout knobs (on/off), drag (resistance), and counterbalance with four settings, used to balance the lens and camera.

The goal is simple:

• Balance the camera and lens.

• Prevent the setup from falling forward or backward.

• Allow smooth panning and tilting to match your tracking style.

Real-World Use

After mounting my Nikon Z 800mm f/6.3 VR S to the Leofoto BV-20K on a tripod, I had everything adjusted within about 10 minutes.

Build Quality and Performance

Everything about this fluid head feels high quality—especially at this price point.

• Rock-solid with large telephoto lenses

• Extremely smooth panning and tilting

• Easy micro-adjustments in the field

• Inspires confidence with my largest lens attached

The One Drawback: Lens Creep

No product is perfect.

• There is some lens creep when locking the lens in an upward tilt.

• The lens sags slightly before fully locking in.

Although annoying at first, I quickly learned to compensate by:

• Framing my subject slightly high

• Letting it settle into the center as the head locks

Final Thoughts

All in all, I am extremely happy with the Leofoto BV-20K fluid tripod head.

For photographers moving into video—especially those invested in the Arca-Swiss ecosystem—it offers outstanding value, performance, and usability.

I only recommend equipment that’s proven itself through early mornings, challenging weather, and my tendency to wander off trail for “just one more shot.”

Thanks for helping support what I do.
