Ultra-Wide Creativity Rediscovered

I have always had a love-hate relationship with wide-angle lenses. 24mm has always been the ideal focal length for my landscapes; plunging below that always seemed out of reach.
Using an ultra-wide-angle lens can be tricky. Compositions can be challenging, and distortion can get away from you. After 2–3 failed attempts lugging around my previous ultra-wide lens, the Nikon 16-35mm f/4 G, it wasn’t very appealing.
Enter the Nikon 14-30mm f/4 S.
This small, lightweight Z-mount lens has earned a permanent place in my bag and helped me reconnect with my creative voice. Getting low and immersing myself in a scene is no longer a challenge. I find myself seeking foregrounds more intentionally and embracing bolder, more dynamic compositions.
Why I love the Nikon 14-30mm f/4 S:
• Impressively sharp for an ultra-wide
• Uses standard 82mm filters (with some awareness of vignetting)
• Minimum focusing distance of 11 inches for dramatic, close foregrounds
It also pairs perfectly with my Nikon Z 24-120mm f/4 S, creating my ideal landscape kit.
I only recommend equipment that’s proven itself through early mornings, challenging weather, and my tendency to wander off trail for “just one more shot.”
