This mid-sized ball head with a full-size lever-release clamp is a game-changer. It is a perfect match for my Leofoto LS-284 CEX tripod.
Made from aluminum and stainless steel, it has all the features you expect from a professional-level ball head and reflects the quality associated with Really Right Stuff products.
Ergonomics & Controls
The ergonomics of this ball head really make life easy. All controls are centrally located, making it easier to use in the field than ball heads with a one-front-and-one-on-each-side layout:
• Central lock knob (tightening knob)
• Tension knob (drag set knob)
• Panning knob (pan lock knob)
The knobs are a nice size and come in different shapes, making them easy to identify by feel.
Lever-Release Clamp
When purchasing this ball head, you can choose between a lever-release clamp and a screw-knob clamp. The lever-release clamp is the only way to go.
• Once the camera is locked in, it stays locked in.
• It takes some force to unlock, so there’s no worry about accidental release.
• You lock it down and forget about it.
I’ve had too many close calls in the past with screw-knob clamps slowly working loose. Having to remind myself to tighten a screw-knob every 15 minutes was distracting—this lever-release eliminates that issue.
There are two lever-release options; I recommend the full-size option, especially when wearing gloves in cold weather.
Load Capacity & Compatibility
This ball head has an 18 lb load capacity, and my Nikon Z8, paired with the Nikon Z 800mm f/6.3 lens (approximately 7.25 lbs), feels completely secure when attached.
One note: This ball head does not come with a quick-release plate. For me, this is a non-issue since I always use L brackets on my cameras and replacement feet on my lenses.
Final Thoughts
All in all, the quality and feature set of the Really Right Stuff BH-40 LR do justify the high price.
I only recommend equipment that’s proven itself through early mornings, challenging weather, and my tendency to wander off trail for “just one more shot.”
