Shimoda Designs Explore V2 35L / 30L Backpack

When photographers begin their journey, they also embark on an endless quest for the perfect camera bag. Two years into my own photographic odyssey, my office floor was littered with camera backpacks—too small, too large, too awkward. I felt like I was having lunch with Goldilocks as she tasted porridge.

Then I stumbled upon the Shimoda Designs Explore V2 backpack series.

What immediately stood out:

Modular Core Unit System

  • Customizable, Velcro-secured dividers

  • Multiple core-unit sizes are compatible across different backpack sizes

The core unit systems come in different sizes. For the 35, I went with the DSLR V3 core unit large. Made for DSLR cameras, it is a little taller. The extra space is great for lenses with carry handles or packing a folded shirt, towel, or other accessories. For the 30, I went with the medium mirrorless core unit since this is my smaller loadout.

Comfort You Actually Notice

  • Generous padding on shoulder straps and hip belt

  • The most comfortable camera backpacks I’ve ever used

Durable, Thoughtful Construction

  • Metal frame for structure

  • AquaGuard and gusseted zippers

  • Tough, water-resistant exterior

Smart Handling & Protection

  • Three carry handles (top, bottom, sides) for easy two-handed pickup

  • Quick, easy-to-use rain cover for unpredictable weather

I started with the 35L in black, and even though it was beautifully designed and incredibly comfortable, I soon ordered the 30L in green. Now I have two options, depending on whether I need to pack my Nikon Z 180–600mm lens, and the different colors make it easy to tell them apart across the room.

For me, these backpacks are near perfection.

I only recommend equipment that’s proven itself through early mornings, challenging weather, and my tendency to wander off trail for “just one more shot.”

Thanks for helping support what I do.
